Pooled analysis of who surgical safety checklist use and mortality after emergency laparotomy
2019
Background The World Health Organization (WHO) Surgical Safety Checklist has fostered safe practice for 10 years, yet its place in emergency surgery has not been assessed on a global scale. The aim of this study was to evaluate reported checklist use in emergency settings and examine the relationship with perioperative mortality in patients who had emergency laparotomy. Methods In two multinational cohort studies, adults undergoing emergency laparotomy were compared with those having elective gastrointestinal surgery. Relationships between reported checklist use and mortality were determined using multivariable logistic regression and bootstrapped simulation. Results Of 12 296 patients incl…
La teoria ecològica del desenvolupament: un marc teòric per a la comprensió del comportament humà
2008
Menstruation: science and society
2020
© 2020 The Authors Women's health concerns are generally underrepresented in basic and translational research, but reproductive health in particular has been hampered by a lack of understanding of basic uterine and menstrual physiology. Menstrual health is an integral part of overall health because between menarche and menopause, most women menstruate. Yet for tens of millions of women around the world, menstruation regularly and often catastrophically disrupts their physical, mental, and social well-being. Enhancing our understanding of the underlying phenomena involved in menstruation, abnormal uterine bleeding, and other menstruation-related disorders will move us closer to the goal of p…
SIMULATING DEMOGRAPHY AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT DYNAMICS
2014
[EN] A deterministic/stochastic model in which the demographic and the well-being subsystems of a country are involved and related is presented as a way to approach human development. The demographic subsystem is a side-by-side, single-gender, age-structured population dynamic model. The well-being subsystem states the dynamics of the United Nations Hybrid Human Development Index. The model has been validated in the case of Spain and Belgium. Some simulations have been performed with the model for the case of Spain in the 2009-2020 period to determine strategies and scenarios that could increase the life expectancy at birth per gender. Do We should Care about Future Participation of Students in the Labour Market?
2014
Abstract The communication presents a theoretical reflection based on the fact that as educational level advances, the unemployment rate decreases. Based on this, we set out what should be the place employability should occupy in higher education. We found that the labour market demands professionals with skills related to creative imagination and innovation capabilities; and these are developed through an education that nurtures students’ curiosity and also linked to the vital concerns of learners. We need to rethink and reflect on the role teachers should play, besides mastering the theoretical knowledge of the disciplines they teach, teachers should become designers and developers of lea…
Surgical site infection after gastrointestinal surgery in high-income, middle-income, and low-income countries: a prospective, international, multice…
2018
Background Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most common infections associated with health care, but its importance as a global health priority is not fully understood. We quantified the burden of SSI after gastrointestinal surgery in countries in all parts of the world. Methods This international, prospective, multicentre cohort study included consecutive patients undergoing elective or emergency gastrointestinal resection within 2-week time periods at any health-care facility in any country. Countries with participating centres were stratified into high-income, middle-income, and low-income groups according to the UN's Human Development Index (HDI). Data variables from the Globa…
Global variation in anastomosis and end colostomy formation following left-sided colorectal resection
2019
Background: End colostomy rates following colorectal resection vary across institutions in high-income settings, being influenced by patient, disease, surgeon and system factors. This study aimed to assess global variation in end colostomy rates after left-sided colorectal resection. Methods: This study comprised an analysis of GlobalSurg-1 and -2 international, prospective, observational cohort studies (2014, 2016), including consecutive adult patients undergoing elective or emergency left-sided colorectal resection within discrete 2-week windows. Countries were grouped into high-, middle- and low-income tertiles according to the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI). Factors associ…
STRUCTURE AND CONTENT OF TEACHER COMPETENCIES
2018
Significant changes in the society of the XXI century determine the changes in the education system. Nowadays the challenge of promoting child development is important. Teaching subjects does not give a generalised idea about nature, society and people in general. Teachers need new competences to move to logic of human development in education. The article analyses teacher’s communicative, self-cognition and cognitive management, methodological and organisational function that are united and contribute to the balanced development of pupils, therefore, in accordance with these functions, it is necessary to acquire the corresponding competences. By analysing theoretical literature, the articl…
Engaging universities in social innovation research for understanding sustainability issues
2017
International audience; The paper presents the analysis of a three-stage research conducted by the authors within a social innovation project in collaboration with international master students of Riga Technical University for determining the factors, which motivate people to be involved in the solution of social problems. The authors not only analyse and use the outcomes of the students’ research but also provide feasibility study of using the potential of study research at the university, for implementing serious research projects. Data collection from Africa, Asia, America and Europe was organised jointly by all the students via web-based survey for creating an original data base for the…
